Helms College students now eligible for Department of Veterans Affairs Education Benefits, AAS degree

Former members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their family members who attend the Helms College, Augusta Campus, are now eligible to receive Department of Veterans Affairs Education Benefits to help fund their education in the culinary arts.

Helms College has received approval to offer programs eligible for G.I. Bill funding, and 13 students seeking VA benefits have enrolled. In addition, the Helms College Augusta Campus now joins the Macon Campus, for which VA funding already is in place, in offering students the opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts degree.

“Because of Fort Gordon and the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, the CSRA has a significant population of veterans seeking post-military education and employment opportunities,” said James K. Stiff, President of Helms College and its parent organization, Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA. “In addition to the services our Good Vocations staff provide at Fort Gordon, our Goodwill offers education and career-placement services to veterans and works with the Augusta-Aiken Warrior Project to assist former members of the military. VA education funding provides an opportunity to expand those services to post-secondary education at Helms College.”

Helms College, founded by Goodwill in Middle Georgia in 2007 and expanded in 2012 to Augusta, is nationally accredited and its programs also are eligible for Title IV funding, with financial aid available for those who qualify. Helms College is a subsidiary of Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA, with campuses in Macon and Augusta.

Helms College offers diploma and associate degree programs in hospitality and culinary arts.

Enrollment is underway for the next classes, which start April 13. For information, contact Helms College admissions staff at (706) 651-9707, or go to www.helms.edu.
